Neck Rolls at the Corner

Neck Rolls at the Corner

I saw this woman, out for a run with the family dog, waiting for a traffic light at the top of Phinney Ridge. She was adding some neck rolls to her routine while standing at the corner, perhaps in time to the music on her iPod. What do you listen to when you are active? Residential Beauty

Do you enjoy looking at houses? For some It is a regular Sunday pastime. I am a fan of many architectural styles, so when I was taking a walk and saw the front elevation of this residence from about a block away, I just said, "Wow!" (For other views, please click my More Seattle Stuff page here ) On seeing this photo, Pip, a kind Seattlite who had reacted as I had told me, "The people who built this are incredibly nice. I used to breakfast at Hi Spot [local cafe popular for great breakfasts] regularly, and we'd pass this every time on the way out for our Sunday drive. They were building it very slowly. We never saw a construction crew. So one day we decided to stop and look around. The owners were there, in their silver bullet streamline trailer nestled on the property. They were happy to show us around inside (it was then still bare bones). Turns out they were both architects [Bennett Lavacot Architecture] and they were using the left over goods from their contracts to slowly build this amazing house for themselves. They have an inside/outside fireplace in there! Truly an amazing piece of Seattle. I always pause to look when I drive by."

And I've Got a Bridge to Go With It

Someone's Got Some Angle Going There

Someone's got some racket going on here. Well, actually it's just a rented water and sludge container at a construction site. But I WOULD like to rent out our gray skies and rain to someone who needs it this weekend, because, really, we don't! Two days of teaser sun and warmer breezes and its back to cold and wet. Consolation prize: since it will be a chilly and rainy weekend I won't feel so badly being indoors finishing up the taxes. Have a great Saturday everyone!

What other colors might you expect in the homeland of the UW Huskies. Even laundromats in gentrifying neighborhoods can show Dawg Pride. The black and white checkered lino floor is just icing on the cake. Speaking of icing, I wonder if delectable Trophy Cupcakes in Wallingford makes a UW inspired creation?

Grotesque of War

Grotesque of War

At the request of Bibi from A Yankee in Belgrade Daily Photo to see a gargoyle from the University of Washington campus, here is an image of one of the 28 grotesques that adorn Smith Hall on the Liberal Arts Quadrangle. People don't tend to notice them at cherry blossom time, but they are up there, looming. This one represents war as you might guess from the WWI style helmet, gas mask, and hand grenade. Many UW students lost their lives in WWI (you can see their names here). Dudley Pratt depicted many themes with these architectural ornaments in the late 1930s. You might remember this one that I featured last year.

If you are a Husky, you will recognize this emblem on Denny Hall, built in 1895, the first building erected on the University of Washington's campus. The university is thought to have one of the most beautiful campuses on the west coast. I enjoy seeing the interesting architectural details to be found in its building designs from many eras. Denny Hall will undergo an estimated 56 million dollar renovation being designed now and expected to take place from late 2009 and completed in September of 2011. This project is part of the the 10 year "restore the core" capital campaign. Please excuse the degraded image resolution I've been experiencing when resizing photos of late. Theme Day: Water

In the Midst of Mists

Water envelops one half of this sculpture installation at a time. This father in Father and Son by Louise Bourgeois is in the midst of mists. Sometimes he is shrouded from view by high water, at others, as in the photo, it's his son that is hidden from view. On this particular day, there is even water above him in the clouds as well as water below. For an overview of the whole fountain which resides in Olympic Sculpture Park, click here and here.

Water flows around the globe today, and you can see just about every creative manifestation of it by visiting these City Daily Photo Blogs. Your journey through 178 cities begins here:
