Leaning on Peet's

Leaning on Peet's

There is a studied choreography of personal space between these Seattlites, and an unconscious similarity in pose. I imagine the gentleman in the center to be thinking, "I am NOT lookin' at his HAT. Sure, we're wearing the same exact thing and I feel mortified, but I'm not asking what store he got his at. Probably paid more than I did, anyway! No, I'll just act like I don't notice we look like twins. . .OMG, he's even standing like me!"

I was thinking that these folks leaning against Peet's Coffee & Tea while waiting for their bus are in danger of strangers trying to decorate and dress them up, mistaking them for the interactive art piece called "Waiting for the Interurban," located diagonally across the street from where they're standing. I'm sure the woman would quickly be sporting a hat, too, and some colorful version of "hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil" would be foisted upon them all.

Caffe Fiore

Whenever I've purchased cappuccinos from Caffee Fiore they have come embellished with that feathery symbol you see in the front window daintily etched in espresso on the white foamy top. It is evening in this photo and this usually well populated Galer Street store is closed, but sort of glows from within.

Evening Walk at the Top of the Street

Evening Walk at the Top of the Street

A contrasting shot to yesterday's bustling downtown action, here in this quiet neighborhood scene I was slightly uphill of two women at the top of the street as they crossed paths at 7th Ave W, one walking a dog. Just visible underneath and beyond the blossoming tree is a tanker at rest in Elliott Bay.

Out for A Stroll

Today is a perfect day for a stroll in the spring sun, not like the rainy opening we had to boating season yesterday. Seattle is really a walker's paradise. Visitors often don't realize until they are here that it is a very hilly city, not the ideal place to traverse in your Jimmy Choo's. I was standing downhill from 1st Ave. when I saw these gentlemen above walking a dog. A bus happened to pass as I took the shot.

Amazon Fresh

I remember when major on-line grocery ordering was a dot com idea gone bust. I'd heard about Amazon Fresh making a foray into the grocery delivery business in Seattle late last year, but this is the first time I'd seen it in the neighborhood (perhaps because a lot of people schedule pre-dawn delivery and I only do pre-dawn sleeping ;^) ). Locally most folks I know who get food deliveries use New Roots Organic veggies and Smith Brothers Farms dairy. Well, Amazon.com is headquartered here in Seattle, and Amazon Fresh apparently operates out of Kirkland, so I guess that makes this a local business. I wonder if they purchase from local providers? Service extends only to the Seattle area and only to certain zip codes at that. I wonder if this will be big in Belltown if it expands there?

Seattle Port Shutdown to Protest War

Boatload

Seattle's normally bustling port was was absolutely still yesterday. The dockworkers of every commercial port on the US west coast held a May Day labor strike to protest US war efforts in Iraq. Thousands joined the union members in a peaceful anti war protest through Seattle streets in the afternoon, ending on Pier 66 in the heart of Seattle's downtown waterfront. I took the bottom shot of the Hanjin freighter coming into Elliott Bay on April 17th. The top photo is yesterday evening with the ship partially reloaded and nothing was stirring. To the top left you can see the Starbucks headquarters clock tower mermaid peering out just beyond the red loading cranes.

Theme Day: Numbers in Your City

63 ELEVEN

Photo & Text Copyright 2008 Seattle Daily Photo. All rights reserved, including reproduction or republishing.

63 ELEVEN is a small but very active Seattle art gallery on 24th Ave NW. I would have loved to have shown this on an opening night when it glows from within and is filled with people admiring the art on the walls; but, the numbers on the exterior wouldn't have shown well, and that is our focus today.

Our CDPB visual portal creators have devised a new way for you to tour the world visually for our theme days by clicking here, so give it a try and see thumbnails of all the entries. Or you can select from among the over 180 cities participating today by clicking on them in our traditional list below. Either way, enjoy seeing what we've found for our numbers theme today and be sure to leave a brief comment for those you visit!
