Within a four block stretch of the Columbia City neighborhood's commercial zone there must be more than a dozen eateries, coffee houses, and bars. This is the view east from Rainier Ave. looking up S. Ferdinand Street where people are waiting outside to be seated at Kallaloo restaurant, and other people are coming and going around them. Can you spot the typo on the Jones Bar-B-Q sign?

Depending on the time of year and time of day, different windows catch the sun's light and can give fun light shows of their own. Here I've caught a stripe of central windows up the face of the Washington Mutual Tower reflecting the sunset glow. The mountain was out at evening as well.

The very popular 3.2 mile workout and walking path around the perimeter of Greenlake is divided into two halves: one for feet and one for wheels. Roller blades seem to outnumber bicycles on the wheeled side. This woman has her routine down to the basic take along needs: water and music. Most roller bladers wear protective knee, elbow and wrist guards, as well as helmets. They go at high speed, so a crash and burn would really hurt. As the last days of summer wind down people are enjoying the sunny days outdoors. Greenlake in the heart of Seattle's north end is a lovely municipal lake with a popular 3.2 mile walking/running/cycling path around it's perimeter. One can get out on the water in canoes, kayaks, sail boats, paddle boats, and row boats. There is a swimming beach and adjacent parks which are always full of sporting activities. A very pleasant and tranquil place to come in any season.

"Under my um-ber-ella-ella-ella-ella-ella. . ." When WILL that song drop off the charts? It came to mind because I thought we'd start the week off with an abstract. This is a detail of a huge windblown inside-out red umbrella sculpture, ( Angie's Umbrella, Jay Pridgeon, 2002) located in a roadway divider on Western Ave. at Lenora in Belltown. This whimsical bumbershoot is kinetic and swivels whichever way the wind is blowing. (For a full view, click here.)
Speaking of music and bumbershoots. . .this coming weekend ushers in the 3 day Labor Day holiday, and with it at Seattle Center comes the huge, fantastic, and exciting annual Bumbershoot music and arts festival. It seems the whole of Seattle turns out for this fun end of summer treat. It is a ginormous, something-for-everyone multi festival of music, dance, film, comedy, literary and visual arts. Everything from world renown headliners to fresh new talent is there to experience. If you will be in town, check it out and try to snag some remaining tickets. Highly recommended!

He was ump pa pa-ing to the Sound at the bluff's edge. A cruise ship was passing by below on its way to Alaska (. . .see it at my More Seattle Stuff page). The wind was swallowing his notes whole and taking them far away.

Neighbors of an older apartment building on Capitol Hill out on the staircase shooting the breeze and keeping cool on a very warm evening. Friday was glorious in Seattle, but our weekend may be rainy. There is a turn in the feel of the air this week and it's getting dark earlier. . .sigh. Here comes autumn around the corner. Wishing you all a wonderful late summer weekend to relax.
