On Tour: Bruce Cockburn

Long a favorite of Seattlites, frequently selling out shows and having a loyal following here, Canadian musician and songwriter Bruce Cockburn straddled the Emerald City this weekend but didn't play here. Instead he opted for more intimate venues 2 hours north and south of here, on Friday in the state capitol of Olympia and on Saturday up near the border in Bellingham. I am a longtime fan and headed down to Olympia (Hi Don and Krise!). I had such a good time, enjoyed the concert from my comfy seat in the Capitol Theater (primarily a film venue), ran into several friends there and got to see a little bit of Olympia's cute downtown which was full of university students and other folks out on the town at nearby restaurants and other close by venues. Kurt in the Window

It's been 15 years since this 27 year old Seattle musician left the scene by his own hand. I passed this black and white poster of Nirvana band member Kurt Cobain displayed in the first floor apartment window of an Uptown building. He's staring at us from the other side. February 20th is Cobain's birthday, and 28 years ago today he received his first guitar as a birthday gift from his uncle. There will be remembrances and parties here in Seattle and even this one in Russia. Were you into the Seattle sounds of the 90s? My daughter was just a baby during that era but can play a cool version of Smells Like Teen Spirit on her guitar none the less.

In Memory, With Thankfulness

It seems to me the heart of musicians' work is playing together, listening to each other, listening to oneself and adding that offering into the mix. Each member influencing and influenced by the others. When the hard work to bring a composite vision together becomes tight, it's an incredible experience to be part of or witness. When you lose a longtime and admired partner, friend, and collaborator, an essential part of who you are leaves the stage when they do. Those left behind may morph and change and grow, but are never the entity they were or would become with that person's unique gift in the mix. My own saxophonist husband had to unexpectedly bow out last year, and so the news of 17 year veteran DMB saxophonist LeRoi Moore's passing on Tuesday made me think of him, his family and band mates with a lot of sadness and great sympathy. DMB figures large here in Seattle, and LeRoi Moore is such an integral part of the music that touches millions of ears and moves countless people like me to sing out loud in the car or dance while we clean house. DMB is touring California just now and, as is their tradition, will play the (Columbia) Gorge in George, WA over Labor Day weekend, with Flecktones saxophonist Jeff Coffin sitting in. I am wishing them all well. I offer this photo I took of a local player this summer as a tribute to a fine working musician who brought a lot of joy to our ears.
