This friendly miss, with her mum's permission, was kind enough to model her pink suede shoes withe the Velcro closures she can fasten herself. Her eyes, expression, and posture represent to me all that parents aspire to for their children. Although I observed her for only a few minutes as she interacted with her parent and a playmate, I got a very real sense that I was observing a well-loved child, one who faces the world and those in it with interest, trust and a quiet joy. Even at her very young age she was capable of inclusive play, bringing her friend over for me to enjoy photographing her shoes, as well.
Tomorrow the city of Seattle will begin hosting a huge and multifaceted 5 day conference called Seeds of Compassion, featuring the Dalai Lama and focusing on parents, educators, caregivers and community nurturing a healthy and compassionate disposition in children during early childhood. A veritable who's who of Seattle's researchers in neuroscience and social & emotional development will be joined by experts in the field from other states for two education sessions tomorrow. These panel discussions will be televised and webcast in 24 languages, and hosted by the Dalai Lama. There are no tickets or space left for any of this ambitious conference's events, classes, or sessions except for the Key Arena benefit concert by Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds tomorrow evening. From what I understand only the $1000 and up tix with backstage pass are available.
